A bit of History

In th The building is famous and featured in many travel guides as the `narrowest` in Paris it is `triple sandwiched` between 3 others building and thus escaped thru the centuries the erosion of time. In the 13th century, it was called La Madeleine and you can see her on the oldest maps of Paris standing proud! When you arrive at studio St Severin, while climbing the stairs look at the window on your left, you are witnessing the first `plumbing` ever, this `cour interieure` hatched the modern concept of `plumbing` ...before that time the human waste were carried up and down the stairs and that hindered the construction of higher building...then came the brilliant idea to create a space where human waste could dry in the air within the building... a revolutionary idea the inner tube was used for solid waste and the liquid waste disposed from the windows directly on the street, while yelling `oitery!` to alert the unwary passerby to take shelter before the warm shower. This idea of a space in the center of a building was an instant success and implemented all over Europe. The space evolved (after the invention of real pipes) to a larger Cour interieure metamorphosing into a space for social meetings, all over Europe you will note that this type of Architecture featuring a cour interiere became a universal standard. It all begun at the St Severin eons ago, the dawn of civility and modern civilization. The old Abbot who lived at the St Severin studio was one of the greatest mavericks of all times. L'abbe Prevost who wrote the famous Manon sitting next to your studio windows for 5 long years, Manon became 2 Operas by Verdi and Puccini, and hatched heretic ideas such as equality-for-all-men. Ideas borrowed later by Rousseau and Voltaire and culminating with The `declaration des droits de l'homme` which were timidly proclaimed for the first time in history by l'Hotel de Ville (across the Bridge near the studio) on 1770 on the place de Greves. Later faire la greve meant to go on strike which was born there. That is how the French Revolution was born. As for those who dared talk of `equality` and `liberty` they were executed with common criminals or those who challenged Nobility, to set an example in front of the Hotel de Ville these weekly executions on place de Greves dated from the 11th century. As you walk past it, take a moment to absorb history. Civilization as we know it, was built on the blood shed by those forgotten intellectuals. As you cross over the bridges bear in mind that the Kings of France and the Nobility lived on the right side of the river, in contrast the new breed of mavericks who spoke of equality lived on the left . The term `left` was coined, and since then the term `leftist` in politics is used universally to this day and it was born right there. Which brings us back to your studio, located in one of the most important neighborhood in history, because it is the place where Democracy was hatched, and 80 millions visitors every year make these streets arguably the most visited location on Earth. In addition there is Napoleon who lived as a young student around the Xavier Privas, he ate and drunk in these streets which were kept untouched by centuries before him and never changed to this day. At the cathedral Notre Dame Napoleon grabbed the crown from the Pope's hands and coronated himself, an action so bold that it warped the paradigm of the day, and was instrumental in defining our modern time, separating Religion from Government in our civil societies, thus also the concept of Secularism was born right there.
